I'm starting this thread of camp needs. One thing that was mentioned to me today was garbage barrels for outside of the porta-potties with a sign saying "PUT IT HERE" or something to that effect. Sounds like a good idea to me, I hope someone can bring one or two down. Any other needs we can think of?

Camp needs some onsite internet. If someone has a wireless connection they can donate for a while, that would be great!

I forgot to add; those are both great suggestions! We need both those things badly. Maybe we could paint the trashcans BRIGHT YELLOW, so people CAN'T MISS THEM. Did you hear that I found a guy and two girls IN ONE TINY PORTAPOTTY getting high yesterday?! -facepalm-

Hi, this is Graham. I can get some AA Big Books, of essentially unlimited number. How many would you like?

The alano club two blocks down from the court house sells the pocket ones for only $4 a piece, but my I-stare-at-a-screen-twenty-hours-a-day probably needs a bigger/large print one.

Well hi,
To be fair, there was, at one point, a NEED list and a WANT list. The cigarettes/tobacco thing was on the WANT list (which is now gone). No one expected it to be donated but we don't censor the things people want. World Peace and Corporate Accountability was on the WANT list for a while too.
As for the people getting stupid in the porta-john...they weren't OM facilitators or something. People walk by and use those things regardless of their interest in OM. Random idiots use them. Think public restroom without the hassle of having to respect a "Restrooms for paying customers only" sign. Drunk frat guys use them. Courthouse visitors use them. I saw a cop come out of one the second day they were there. Relax for pete's sake. It's not like smoking a bowl or doing a bump of coke in a big smelly plastic box is becoming a trend. More drugs are done in downtown alleys than have ever been done in that porta-john OR Occupy Missoula. What did you expect us to do; catch them before they went in? (We're good, but we're not up to mind reading yet.)
As for expecting someone to "subsidize a homeless camp"...uhm...well...yeah. If we're living out there...effectively....the camp is home. Most of the Occupants had the LUXURY of going home to get things to share with the encampment but, in effect, it's somewhat like being homeless. So, if you wanted a movement....and that movement involved OCCUPATION out of doors by a bunch of people who were going to be making the courthouse lawn their home...then I guess you're subsidizing a homeless camp. Go figure. What'd you think was happening out there? A freakin' bake sale?
90% of the needs being met at the encampment are Occupier needs. Some of those Occupants are people without homes....participating, sign carrying, grounds keeping, kitchen cleaning, recycling sorting, hard ass working homeless people who are supporting OM. And the rest of us get to play homeless until we get tired of it and go home where it's warm.
Someone wanted this movement. Someone asked for an Occupation. If the growing pains of the first few weeks are too messy or offensive for some people then perhaps actual, front lines activism isn't the road we should be walking. Getting squeamish and withdrawing support because of a few mistakes and temporary obstacles says more about the person doing the running away than it does the people making those mistakes. Might as well dig deep for a bigger pair because HUMAN BEINGS are making this thing work and we're going to make a bunch more mistakes before we're done.
Cheers

P.S.
The camp need PROPANE refills. The temp tomorrow night is going to be in the single digits. The camp needs coffee and tea and cocoa for the same reason...because it's cold.
The camp needs a wall tent or two for people to huddle in. Our big wall tent is coming down this week (or perhaps came down today). We have a propane heater but it won't matter much if there's no tent to put it in.
Lastly, we could use people to come get apples and other produce that people bring us and make food out of them. Make food for yourself, make food for the encampment...whatever. But someone needs to eat all those darned apples! ;D

P.P.S. The camp could also use people to come by and pick up a bag of garbage or two. We are no longer allowed to use the dumpster on site. Just stop by and take out the trash. You'll be loved BIG.

Some camp needs as of today - 21 November 2011 -
1) Lanterns/flashlights lights/headlamps for inside the big green tent. (It's darn dark in there) 2) Socks 3) Sub-zero gear of any sort 4) Garbage bags 5) Volunteers to take away a bag of trash each time they visit. 6) Cots to get the campers up off the ground 7) Dog and cat food 8) Emergen-C
It's always wise to check with the campers before donating anything. You never know if someone got to it before you read this notice
One of the things I will be talking about at camp today is the reality that the encampment isn’t the only facet of Occupy Missoula that draws from resources (people, funding, time). I don’t believe any of the campers think that the camp is OM’s #1 focus…but I do think that, from time to time, it is easy to forget that there’s a lot going on that isn’t seen or known about at the camp because the focus there is survival. When we meet today, one of the topics of conversation is going to revolve around how the camp can better meet its own needs as well as what work can be done there that involves the greater mission of OM/OWS. It is my sincere belief that if the camp members had things to do besides occupy a space, not only would they feel more involved but OM would have additional resources from which to draw.
Anyone who would like to propose work for the encampment to do is welcome to contact me. When proposing a project, please keep in mind that if it requires leaving the encampment for large blocks of time supplemental security people will be needed to protect the home that has grown there.
Many people signed up as volunteers for security and other help at the camp but that idea has either not been acted on or the list has been lost. After the meeting this afternoon, I will have a better idea of what help is actually needed at camp and will attempt to reinvent the list that was started a few weeks ago. For those wondering what help they might offer, one of the things that would help immediately is having someone at the camp from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 pm so that the campers can go to the Pov for lunch and then someone from 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. so that they can have dinner. Hot food is a luxury. A couple of volunteers at those times, 7 days a week, would enable them to eat a decent meal and get a few minutes away from the work they do there.

Also, before I left for Bozo I stashed a large chunk of salvaged carpet, in very good shape, in an undisclosed location in downtown Missoula. If Kathleen, Ivy, Mark, or somebody will send me a message on this site or CALL me, I'll disclose the location of the sweet-ass carpet and tell you how to obtain it. Kathleen has my number. Peas, yo!
