Right now companies owned by two of the richest men in the country are being allowed to pollute our town's north end, endangering the health and quality of life of local residents. Montana Rail Link, operator of a train fueling station and the rail line that passes through the north part of town, is owned by millionaire Denny Washington. The majority of trains on the tracks belong to BNSF, now owned by Warren Buffett. While the 1% uses Missoula as a corridor for their industry, our health is being endangered by coal dust and diesel fumes from trains.
This Monday, November 14th, we have a chance to take action. Please join a contingent of UM students and Missoula residents who will be attending the Missoula City Council's regular meeting Monday evening, to raise concerns about the rail industry during the public comment period.
The Council meeting starts at 7pm in the City Hall Council Chambers, and we will be meeting outside City Hall at 6:30. Please come ready to be polite and respectful with the city councilors; they are not the 1%, and they may well be receptive to our concerns if we approach this matter in a spirit of goodwill.
We will ask the City Council to do everything in its power to work with state and federal agencies to protect Missoula from the impacts of existing rail traffic, and from pending proposals to increase that traffic even more. Whether you want to speak to the Council or just come and support those who are speaking, please join us!

nick, i wonder how our town, our state, can decrease rail related pollution by coal dust, diesel fuel fumes and noise while at the same time increase rail use by way of passenger trains? maybe these two types of trains pollute differently?

Bullet trains are quiet and fume free. They run on magnetic propulsion.
Rail link could use some biodiesel and clean up their act.
