Never too early to start thinking/planning for upcoming events! Many know that Missoula has had May Day Parades the last few years commemorating the REAL labour day as it is celebrated around the rest of the world.
This year, because of the confrontation with capital that Occupy and other global movements represent, I expect a huge turn-out. This is also a great day to show solidarity with the Immigrant rights movement as they have been organizing big May Day marches and rallies around the country. I have been involved with organizing May Day events for several years and would be willing to start a work group to put this together. Anybody else interested?
Also, we don't want to forget that the G8 and NATO summits are coming to Chicago May 15 -22 Expect huge gatherings for this and the Repub Convention in Tampa Bay in August and Dems in Charlotte NC in Early Sept. Summer of Fun! Occupy Everything!

We had an awesome day of food, music, parades, and kickball at last year's May Day festival! Let's Occupy May Day 2012! And here's a bit of May Day background! The Brief Origins of May DayBy Eric Chase Most people living in the United States know little about the International Workers' Day of May Day. For many others there is an assumption that it is a holiday celebrated in state communist countries like Cuba or the former Soviet Union. Most Americans don't realize that May Day has its origins here in this country and is as "American" as baseball and apple pie, and stemmed from the pre-Christian holiday of Beltane, a celebration of rebirth and fertility. ................. History has a lot to teach us about the roots of our radicalism. When we remember that people were shot so we could have the 8-hour day; if we acknowledge that homes with families in them were burned to the ground so we could have Saturday as part of the weekend; when we recall 8-year old victims of industrial accidents who marched in the streets protesting working conditions and child labor only to be beat down by the police and company thugs, we understand that our current condition cannot be taken for granted - people fought for the rights and dignities we enjoy today, and there is still a lot more to fight for. The sacrifices of so many people can not be forgotten or we'll end up fighting for those same gains all over again. This is why we celebrate May Day. from www.iww.org/en/history/library/misc/origins_of_mayday

It's true the weather can be a little iffy but we can also secure an indoor facility as part of the event. One year we had music upstairs at the Union Hall after the march. We have had union participation in the past as well, they have an awesome blow-up Fat Cat. Other great puppet makers have brought pigs and banks and we have had theatre etc..
Thanks for the history Kim, the thing to remember is that the US Labor day is an attempt to remove the basic labor versus capital antagonism out of the event. We need to re-invigorate it!
