If you are like me, and desperately want to see a better world begin to take shape, this movement could be one of the most important moments in our lives! It could be an opportunity to begin unraveling the bonds of a society that separates and atomizes us. Let's find each other, listen to each each, teach each other, and learn together!
If you would like to facilitate a Study Group class, one way you can do that is to post your study topic idea to this forum by signing up then clicking "New Thread."
Be sure to state the study group subject, and the dates and times you are available to meet.
In those first few Occupy meetings, there were 22 topics of study suggested...if one of those was yours and you are still interested in studying that topic, this is the place to begin organizing a study group of your own! With time, I hope we can have an organized free school that develops organically from our collective desire to learn and connect.
Developing our critique allows us to create a more effective movement. I believe that we all have something to teach and we all have much more to learn. .......................................................................... Hey Kim, I am just wanting to have a conversation about times and location and role of study groups. Just as I said in an earlier email, I feel it is important that the discussions that we are having, these forums, are beneficial to the movement as a whole and that people's access to them is accomodated as best it can be.
I have been a little dismayed that I have not known the forum by which to participate in the discussion of the role of the teach-ins, as I think there may be a number of ideas that need to find some common ground.
I look forward to hearing from someone about their thoughts. My earlier email received two responses and an attempt to ask when and if we were meeting again went totally unanswered, so I am effectively out of the loop.
Thanks for your time and energy, Kate

I think that communication has been a challenge, as there was simply an email string started. Awesome discussion ensued, but digitally it was easy for folks to drop off the list as "reply all" is only so efficient!
Please join us on Thursdays at the UC if you would like. Also, I will see if I can import the discussion from the email list to this forum and get people to continue those lines of thought here. New topics can be started and online discussions ensue here via the Study Groups forum as well. Paz y sonrisas, KB

I am posting this information as informal minutes to the Learning groups work group meeting on Sunday Oct 23. So far the study group organization has been, well, not actually organized at all! I got together with a few people on Saturday, and we discussed setting up a "block system" of classes: For example, this week we have a facilitator who wants to discuss Transition Towns, so we will spend a "block" (an as-yet-to be determined length of time but maybe 4 weeks?) discussing the concept of transition towns, before moving into the next block for this "class period" (eg Thursday 5:30 to 6:30 pm). Ideally, another class period will spring up and another system of blocks. In this way, it will be like a schedule of classes: you can review the topics and calendar and pick the ones that interest you and fit your life. Fair warning: we are a ways from that kind of organization right now! Beyond the OM calendar, anyone know a good scheduling tool that we could use for organizing ourselves? Also, at the work group meeting on Sunday we discussed proposing to the GA that we start having a half hour discussion period prior to the bigger GAs held on the weekend. This period will be dedicated to listening to each other and learning from each other, and may lead to further spontaneous study groups. This is an organic process, so input and help organizing is definitely welcome! And vital to the process!

This effort is important if any momentum is to be carried through winter. People with lots of energy and knowledge have been assembled, now we have to learn and grow through each other. Look forward to the class!
